This is what our language sounded like a thousand years ago, before the Norman conquest began the influx of French influences which are such a large part of it today.

It's interesting to know what it sounded like way back then.
Changes within languages are what give time travellers away.
Mary: It's fascinating to me. I know German pretty well and this sounds almost more like German than like modern English.
Phat: If I ever went back to the eleventh century, I'm sure they'd spot me right away.
I agree, it sounds a lot like German. My great-grandmother used to say the Lord's Prayer in German to us when she put us to bed. She was born in Cologne & came to the US when she was 6.
She might have been able to understand this better than a modern English-speaker can.
