Various interesting stuff I ran across on the net over the last week.

People are starting to think everything is "AI".

Here's a short tale of a life on the run.

This should be good -- Guillermo del Toro has made an adaptation of Frankenstein.

The remains of Pompeii offer us a window into the lives of women in ancient Roman culture.  Based on these examples, it was normal for women to run their own businesses and actively participate in public life, something not common in most societies at the time.

Robotics hasn't totally overcome the uncanny valley effect yet -- but it's getting there.

NASA is planning to build a radio telescope on the side of the Moon that faces away from Earth, where it will be shielded from interference from Earth's numerous radio sources.  The telescope will be built by robots and presumably operated by remote control, so there will be no need for dangerous and expensive manned missions to the Moon.

Here's why the Titanic is rotting away on the ocean floor while much older sunken wooden ships are preserved.

Japanese researchers have apparently found the cause of long covid -- and a treatment that reduces its symptoms.

It turns out that eating marijuana edibles is as bad for your heart as smoking the stuff is.

Pigs don't fly, but their shit does.

SpaceX is far below the level of technological proficiency that NASA achieved sixty years ago.  The endless "Starship" test failures show that the concept is unworkable and should be abandoned.

A photographer and poet laments the proliferation of fake art.

This writer asked ChatGPT to review some of her essays, and posts the full conversation that resulted.  It's a bit long, but if you believe "AI" is useful for anything, you really need to read this.

Blogger Bluzdude is worried about "AI" getting out of control.

This person refused to condemn a horrific attempted mass murder because he wasn't allowed to express his sympathy for the would-be killer's bigotry.

Believe it or not, this is a right-wing blog.

These girls had courage.

The brilliance and imagination of Ukraine and Israel are the perfect antidote to the moan-groan-doom-gloom crowd's pessimism about the democratic world.

Elon Musk's flimsy Starlink satellites are easily knocked out of orbit by solar storms.

As the internet fills up with "AI"-generated garbage, "AI" programs seeking material to plagiarize are increasingly eating their own shit, driving themselves ever closer to collapse.

This food and product recall sounds really bad.  Here's the FDA announcement.

"We said no.  Manage your expectations."

The "No Kings" protests will take place next Saturday, June 14.  Here's their main site, where you can find an event or get other information.

Never forget the Farhûd.

The Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that all plaintiffs should be judged by the same burden of evidence regardless of sex or ethnicity -- a big step toward real equality under the law.

A newly graduated law clerk used a chatbot to write a legal brief, and of course the brief was riddled with errors and cited at least one legal case that doesn't exist.  He has been fired, and needs to be blacklisted too -- students who use "AI" need to know that it's the royal road to a life of "do you want fries with that".

The Camden DE police department -- the only police department in Delaware to have formally partnered with ICE -- has abandoned the partnership due to opposition from local people.

"It's about domination."

This company claimed to have "AI" that actually produced usable software.  In fact, it was a trick -- the software was actually created by human engineers posing as "AI".

The Senate is now considering a bill which would give cryptocurrency holders priority over people with real dollars in case of a bank collapse, in certain cases.

Right after the election, I said, "Giving Elon Musk a prominent role in the Trump administration might be even worse; an alliance of two stupid, bumbling, narcissistic megalomaniacs with different agendas is asking for trouble."  After this week's events, I claim vindication.  Both these guys are impulsive, bullying toddlers whose wealth has shielded them all their lives from having to learn normal self-control.  There's probably no limit to how much this poo-flinging fight can escalate.

Keep up the pressure on Elon Musk.  With his money, ideology, and mental issues, he's still a threat to democracy and national stability even without a government role.  If the Tesla Takedown campaign succeeds, it will ruin him and destroy Twitter and his other deranged ventures as well.

Right now there are half a million more houses for sale in the US than people wanting to buy them, creating downward pressure on prices.  Hopefully it's another step toward making housing in general more affordable.

Proposed Trumpazoid cuts to NASA's budget would be disastrous to US space science.  They would defund most real science and shift NASA's focus to sending humans to Mars, which is not going to happen and would serve no scientific purpose if it did.

Thuggish mobs of street racers took over several Portland streets last weekend, but police were too busy dealing with even worse violent crimes to respond.

RFK Jr's "AI"-generated "report" on health in the US is total garbage, no matter how many excuses and lies the administration bleats out.

Tesla owners are installing improvised gimmicks to get their car doors open in an emergency.

Trump's meeting with Merz was just another reminder of what a huge embarrassment he is to the US.

Job-seekers find that the employment market is the worst it's been in their lifetimes.  This will likely hurt Republicans in 2026 and 2028 the same way inflation and crime hurt the Democrats in 2024 -- people care about what they're actually experiencing in their own lives, not the statistics spouted by talking heads on TV.

Tariffs have forced Alaska Airlines to delay accepting new planes it had ordered, leading to numerous canceled flights.

In Texas, a draconian proposed law to block shipments of abortion pills seems to have failed.

Here's why it matters that Trump has turned against the Federalist Society.

Far more gay people feel that they have a lot in common with straight people than feel the same about trans people.  The "LGBT" thing was always a lie.

Democrats need to focus on policies that help people directly and in easily-understood ways.  That means economic populism instead of babble about Gaza and preferred pronouns.

US military recruitment is way up -- the Army has already met its recruitment goals for this fiscal year, four months early.

In an ominous sign for my state's future, it now has more people over 65 than under 18.

Disgusted clients are abandoning law firms that kowtow to Trump.

The Washington Post continues its slide into irrelevance with plans to start publishing "AI"-generated crap.

Trump backs down again, canceling plans to garnish Social Security benefits for unpaid student loans.

Many Russian submarines have become useless due to lack of spare parts -- "the domestic [Russian] & Chinese replacement parts are crap".

Jewish women in Israel now have a higher fertility rate than Muslims.  I can remember when the Jew-haters used to gloat that Muslims in Israel would someday overwhelm the Jews via population growth.  Not gonna happen.

The BBC has retracted claims of a mass shooting at a Gaza aid site; the video which supposedly showed the event was taken at a completely different location and time.

Had a difficult tooth extraction Friday -- the dentist gave me a sedative for the procedure, which resulted in sleeping right through most of the afternoon and evening.  So I may have missed some recent posts.

See reactions from ordinary Russians in the area as the drone attack on the Belaya airfield unfolded:

The Kyiv Independent put together this video footage from the drones' own cameras as they closed in on various warplanes.  1:33 to 1:59 shows attacks on two AWACS planes, super-expensive high-tech airborne command-and-control posts.  When a drone gets in close and the video cuts off, that likely means the drone detonated at that point:

Great selection of links this morning!

"Right after the election, I said, "Giving Elon Musk a prominent role in the Trump administration might be even worse; an alliance of two stupid, bumbling, narcissistic megalomaniacs with different agendas is asking for trouble." After this week's events, I claim vindication. Both these guys are impulsive, bullying toddlers whose wealth has shielded them all their lives from having to learn normal self-control. There's probably no limit to how much this poo-flinging fight can escalate." - I remember that; good call. I am anticipating that as the Musk Money spigot turns off; providing that the Ketamine Crackhead continues to take his marble$$$ and go home, all of this... crap... we are sitting through will come to an abrupt end. Trump just set the precedent for how he's going to treat all the other billionaire tech bros that lined up to kiss his ass during the inauguration. The money will all disappear. Can't quite make it up selling hats made in China, either.

I am also glad to read that AI is being cooked, too.

It's really sad and troubling what is going on with Trump and Elon. Just ridiculous.

Once marijuana became legal here in Las Vegas I see a lot of people eating those edibles. I had a feeling that it was bad for you. No one will listen though.

The self driving cars seem like such a bad thing. I don't remember who said it in a video but they said lots of robots are being made, self driving cars are going to soon run a background check on you and take you straight to the police station if it finds out you have an active warrant when you get in the car. I wouldn't doubt it a bit.

Taking pictures of yourself or others in a public restroom is just wrong.

Sorry to hear you had a hard time at the dentist this week. I really hate going to the dentist.

Rade: Thanks! If Trump gets bogged down in a fight with the tech billionaires, that will be all to the good. I'm sure they relish their tax cuts, but any Republican would give them that, and they can't be happy with Trump's tariffs messing up their business.

Mary: I'm sure marijuana is less dangerous than cigarettes, but that's not saying much. I wasn't happy to see that even edibles are dangerous, but the science is what it is.

Self-driving cars are impossible until we have machines with actual intelligence and self-awareness, and we're nowhere near developing that. I don't understand this mania for abolishing jobs in favor of machines. If people don't want to do their own driving they can get an Uber or something.

The dentist visit wasn't actually too bad. The sedative was so powerful I can hardly even remember the procedure, and there's been very little pain. The tooth he took out was broken with sharp edges and kept cutting my tongue -- it needed to be gotten rid of. He's a very good dentist. I've been going to him for decades now.

Thanks for all of these links...a lot of food for thought.

Just a few random observations:

1) You and Hal Sparks turned out to be 100% correct about Elon and his relationship with Trump. Then again, this entire administration is packed top to bottom with incompetent and corrupt members--and yet too many, including in our media, refuse to point out the clear differences between this gang of fools and the competent and caring Biden Administration...but Joe was too old and boring, I guess....

2) "Operation Spiderweb" will be studied for years as one of the greatest military actions in history. It certainly caught Russia (and Putin, for that matter) with their pants down. And it also showed just how much of a paper tiger Russia really is.

3) You know my views on GenAI and why it's a piece of crap--a balloon that Ed Zitron and others have been poking holes in despite the promises of pushers like Sam Altman.

4) It is very true that if NASA had the track record of Elon and Starship in regards to how many times rockets exploded they would have been shut down back in the 60s. As it is, I don't remember ever reading about the Saturn V screwing up as badly as Starship has--in fact, I don't believe the Saturn V ever screwed up at all. Even when things seemed to go wrong--like lightning striking Apollo 12 on liftoff and Skylab being damaged on launch--the Saturn V still functioned and got their payloads into orbit.

4) Del Toro's adaptation of FRANKENSTEIN looks...well, amazing! Do I wish it would be released in theaters? Sure--but I'll take what I can get. I do hope that this may lead to Del Toro being able to do his long-gestating adaptation of Lovecraft's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS.

...Speaking of films--this year is the 30th anniversary of the release of the GHOST IN THE SHELL anime film, the first adaptation of Shirow Masamune's ground--breaking cyberpunk manga. The live-action 2017 GITS film with Scarlett Johannson took several cues from the 1995 anime. Both films still hold up, as far as I'm concerned. A new GITS project is on its way next year.

Why mention GITS? Well, it deals with human brains/minds being put into synthetic bodies...and that ties into the upcoming series ALIEN: EARTH which is a direct prequel to the classic 1979 SF/Horror film. Being that I am a huge fan of the original film and its 1986 sequel--and I also love the recent ALIEN: ROMULUS, I am looking forward to this one which will be an eight-episode series. The trailer is here:

The Frankenstein movie looks awesome! From time to time, Netflix really nails it. I hated their adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See. But last year, my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the remake of The Talented Mr. Ripley which is in black and white! I recently watched part of the first episode of a another Netflix series, Monsieur Spade, which holds promise. It's based on Dashell Hammett's detective, Sam Spade only this time the action unfolds in France so some of the dialogue is in French. My first impression is positive.

Fascinating article on the women of Pompeii!

Sorry about the pig dusting. I grew up not far from a pig farm. My school bus would drive past every day and pick up the kids who lived there--very nice people but there were times when their clothes reeked. I'm sure I've consumed more that my fair share of pig manure.

The phone scams are getting extraordinarily sophisticated. I have two friends who came very close to sending bail money to get their kids (living on the other side of the country) out of jail after being told the kid was at fault in an auto accident where someone had been gravely injured. In one case, my friend thought she was speaking with her daughter who was very upset and hard to understand. Then police and a fake attorney got involved. Luckily, she contacted a defense attorney in the state where her daughter was supposedly in custody before delivering the money.

A different woman I know who studies voice reproduction technology wasn't surprised, saying that crooks can do a great job of reproducing someone's voice with only 30 seconds of sample speech. Don't answer the phone if you don't know the number. If it's important, they'll leave a message and if you're concerned, you can google to find out if you're dealing with potential scammers before returning their call.

Wow, Infidel: So much to ponder!

I hope you're healing well after the tooth extraction...and that no more are needed.

In no particular order...

The helpful kitties were a good smile creator, as was the turtle taking the young'un for a walk.

"Remembering George" was poignant and provided a valuable insight.

You're entitled to claim credit for your Musk assessment. I never thought things would end well, and I'm not sure we've seen the conclusion of the damage these two narcissists can do to us as they try to destroy one another. I'm just sorry Musk took down his Epstein taunt.

Musk reminds me of the title of Rick Wilson's book about Trump: everything he touches dies. A small example of his overhype: The Subaru we bought in 2015 came with Starlink GPS. We immediately found it useless and have relied on other methods. It's hard to figure when people will stop finding him such a compelling, gifted figure. And yes, the Tesla Takedowns should continue; they have the possibility of relieving him of the World's richest man designation.

The Pompeii article was fascinating. I'd never heard anything about women's prominence there--probably for the reason the author stated.

All your information about the Ukrainian feat has been excellent--and is much appreciated.

I spent more damn time than I expected on the robot obstacles "contest." Couldn't pull myself away!

Marc: The mainstream media, now owned almost entirely by corrupt power-hungry billionaires, have totally failed to keep the public informed about what a bad job the current government of corrupt power-hungry billionaires is doing. I can't imagine why that might be.

Operation Spiderweb is an utter humiliation for Russia and Putin. The FBI here regularly ferrets out and stops much smaller plots like plans for a mass shooting by a single individual, but Russia had no inkling of something this huge that was unfolding for months under their noses? And there's not much Putin can do in response except keep rocketing civilian areas, which he was doing anyway.

It's more than half a century now since NASA landed men on the Moon and brought them back, multiple times. Musk seems incapable of launching anything that doesn't blow up.

I need to watch more of del Toro's movies. The Shape of Water was awesome. But I'm not a fan of the Alien movies after the original four. They completely destroy the meaning of the originals. The alien species which the Nostromo encountered had already been on Earth in Antarctica in 1904? The enigmatic "space jockey" was just a big man in a suit? The aliens were created by a discontented robot from Earth instead of being a naturally-evolved species? Never before have a bunch of sequels so comprehensively trashed the premise of the original. It's part of what soured me on franchises in general. They eventually turn into empty gambits to make money, and nothing more.

Carol: I'm hoping that this will finally be a Frankenstein adaptation that sticks close to the original novel. Restoring Shelley's eloquent and thoughtful monster might startle audiences expecting the usual grunting zombie, but del Toro could pull it off.

I once worked (in accounting) in an industrial place that was right next to a pig farm. The stench whenever I went outside was intolerable. I can't imagine what it must be like living like that.

There need to be much more severe penalties for these scams, when they catch people. The elderly especially are very vulnerable when they don't realize what modern technology can do. My own phone is hardly ever switched on. It probably saves me some hassles.

Annie: Thanks. The extraction seems to be healing pretty well -- not much pain. I'll have a follow-up with the dentist soon.

I've often thought about the ongoing loss of memory that the "George" post lamented. I have only fragmentary memories of my grandparents (mostly due to growing up in a different country) and know almost nothing about the generation before. The vast majority of lives that have been lived are now completely forgotten, however full they were.

Trump and Musk still have a lot of capacity to cause damage. The more of it they do to each other rather than to the rest of us, the better. The fact of such childish, arrogant, amoral, and utterly unqualified men rising to such power in a great nation always puts me in mind of Caligula.

The fact that it was so well preserved makes Pompeii a window into what life was really like in the Roman Empire. While the position of women there certainly fell short of equality, it was remarkably better than in any other major culture at the time. I'm sure this is the root of the differences we see today between the modern West (whose cultural roots are mostly Roman, not Christian) and most other modern societies.

The Ukrainians are showing the whole world how it's done. I suspect they have more surprises to come yet.

Interesting discussion in the take on the bible. I thought this statement by Joni was bizarre "I never made the claim that God is supernatural". Because being supernatural is the very definition of God. It reminded me of Jordan Peterson's appearance on surrounded recently in which Peterson defines belief in God as curiosity. It is hard to debate people who believe in God when they keep changing the definition of God.
Are you going to the No King Protest? I am - Manitou will have a little one.

When she started claiming God isn't necessarily supernatural, that's when I checked out from the discussion. At that point it just becomes word games and not serious.

The tendency by these people to sabotage serious discussion by ridiculous re-definitions of words just shows that they don't have any good points that can be made in plain language. Most of these silly, trite re-definitions of "God" would have gotten them burned at the stake by their own fellow Christians a few hundred years ago.
