The No Kings rallies

By all accounts yesterday's events were a major success.  Total turnout has been estimated at four to six million based on aggregated data from the various cities and towns, larger than for any previous anti-Trump day of protest.  One protest here in Portland, at the local ICE facility, devolved into a riot with extensive vandalism and four police officers injured, and there were a few reports of Trumpists trying to start fights with protesters in other cities, but on the whole there was negligible violence for a nationwide event of this size.  The most notable violence of the day was the shooting of two legislators and their spouses in Minnesota, apparently by a fundamentalist crackpot, unrelated to the No Kings rallies.

Annie Asks You blog has a report from New York City.  See also reports from St Petersburg FL, Oakland CA, Dallas Fort Worth TX, Sacramento CA, Portland OR, and Catonsville MD.  (There was also apparently a major police fiasco in Los Angeles.)  Here are pictures from around the country -- some of the crowds look huge -- and some favorite signs.

Trump's much-ballyhooed parade, by contrast, seemed like a rather low-energy and uninspired event, with just a meager audience.  Even Trump looked bored and depressed (the only person in that video who looks at all animated is Melania, and she's probably had quite a lot of practice at faking feelings).  A retired general denounced the parade as un-American and "a colossal waste of time, effort and money".  64% of Americans also disapproved of the expenditure.

Take heart.  The energy is on our side.

Update:  The National Park Service is now estimating total turnout at over eleven million.  Generally I don't post crowd-size estimates unless they give a credible objective source or at least an explanation of how the number was arrived at, but the National Park Service is generally considered reliable at making such estimates.

I've posted plenty -- in the general context of class war, where they're historically symbolic. Obviously on your own blog you can post whatever you like.

Good to learn of the Park Service statistics. There was a very good turn out in my town of Ann Arbor. I don't have a number but here is an aerial video to watch on double or triple speed to give you an idea. https://youtu.be/0ge4yFnwKdQ

Friends of ours were vacationing on Beaver Island, in the northern part of Lake Michigan, which is not even accessible by car. And they joined more than 100 protesters there. I'm not sure minor gatherings like that one, which took place all over the country, were picked up by the Park Service.

I'm glad that "No Kings" had such a good turn-out!

"Take heart. The energy is on our side."

Indeed...but that energy MUST be taken into the voting booths this year and next year and the years that follow. These protests--as great as they were to see and that they are necessary--will mean nothing if we do not turn out to vote.

Good to see the massive turnout for the No Kings rallies and the pathetic turnout for Trump's absurdly expensive military rally. Encouraging that opposition to his policies seems to be growing fast.

Carol: That's my impression from the various city and town posts I've seen. Some of the crowds look enormous. It really won't be surprising if the higher-end estimates are vindicated eventually. Trump has been far more aggressively shitty than in his first term, and the public response is correspondingly greater.

Ricko: So am I. It's clear that people are very energized.

Marc: Certainly voting is the most important thing, but it's not true that the rallies mean nothing in themselves. Some universities, companies, and other institutions have been more willing to stand up to Trump after seeing the great turnout at earlier protests. Members of Congress, too, are likely to pay attention to such strong displays of commitment among their voters.

Nick: It is indeed growing as the damage becomes apparent. And remember that we haven't yet seen the real harm from the tariff chaos, because of the long lead times for the transit of goods across the oceans. But those shortages will hit soon, and will catch the attention of consumers and businesses.

Our little protest in Manitou was very safe and fun. We had a trumper drive through with his flag numerous times. One flag said "the constitution matters" so every time he drove through, we chanted that at him. It was very cathartic to yell with like minded people.

It must take an incredible level of cognitive dissonance (or ignorance) to carry a flag saying "the Constitution matters" and still support Trump.
